Test Tabbed View: not for IE 6 & below

General: Opening Files in Photoshop

Image files such as .jpg and .gif files can be opened by a whole variety of applications. If you double-click one of these files on a disk, the file may open in a different application than Photoshop, such as Macintosh Preview or Windows Picture Viewer. To avoid this problem, first open Photoshop and then choose File > Open raw dialog boxto open the desired image file.

Sometimes .jpg files will open in an intermediary Camera Raw dialog box. If this happens, just click the Open Image button on the bottom right side of the Camera Raw dialog box to open the image in Photoshop.

Annoying formatting: you will find that Panel is not capitalized in many of the headings where it should be capitalized. (Did a last minute Find and Change that didn't work quite right.)

Videos

Barbara Heiman has recorded videos that demonstrate key Photoshop and Bridge techniques. These videos are intended to AUGMENT not to REPLACE the textbook, and they do not show every step in the written Guided Exercises. Often the videos show techniques that are not in the written book. The video list also includes some videos recorded last year for CS3. They will not match the CS4 book, but will show the CS3 interface. The volume on these earlier videos can be very faint--you may need to turn up your volume to full blast to hear them.

The videos range in lenth from a few minutes to nearly an hour. You may want to right or control + click the video link and save the movie files to your hard drive or flash drive, and then play them locally as time permits.

Overview & Tutorial Guidelines

Vista users: on P. 4, step 3. You should choose PERSONALIZE not Properties to change your monitor resolution, as needed.

Tutorial 1 • Basics

Videos

getting_started.mov (10.25 min) shows how to configure your Photoshop environment to match those used in the book.

navigation.mov (11.5 min) shows how to view and use the Navigation panel, and shows other techniques for document navigation.

workspaces.mov (8.5 min) demonstrates the use of the built-in workspaces included in Photoshop CS4, and also shows how to create your own custom workspace that begins with the Essentials workspace, and then adds the Navigator and History panels to the workspace. Custom workspaces are not in the written book.

CS3-pumpkin-carving.mov (23.08 min) provides an introduction to the History panel (called the History palette in CS3), the layers panel or palette, the Brush tool, the Eraser tool, and layer styles. I did not redo this video for CS4.

CS3 users only should view the CS3-workspace.mov (22.22 min) video.

Errata & Clarifications

windows workspace

P 8: the Applications bar was accidentally cropped off the top of the Windows workspace. If you have a big monitor, the Application bar may be to the right of the Menu bar, and you will not be able to rearrange them.

single bar

P 12, step 9a: The tools panel is on the same page, not on the next one (as stated).

P. 13, just above step 11. We the authors added an adjustment layer to the document, to demonstrate how the Title bar changes when there is an additional, active layer. You have not added an adjustment layer, so you will not see this complicated Title bar on your document.

P. 18 on. The zoom percentages you see may vary from the ones we show and describe, as they are dependent on the size of your monitor and the resolution it is set to. The navigation.mov video explains this further.

P. 22, step 13b should state: reapply steps 9-10 to change the Eraser tool's brush tip size to 25 pixels.

P. 24, step 7c. Mac users only (all versions). The Mac version of Photoshop does not list the file extensions next to the Format name in the Format drop down menu. You should choose the top item on the list, Photoshop, to save your file in PSD format.

Tutorial 2 • Files for Print and Web

Videos

Everyone: CS4-printing.mov. This video shows the File > print dialog box, and explains some of its various settings. This dialog box is only slightly changed from CS3.

CS4 users: CS4-save4web.mov. Shows the Save For Web and Devices dialog box for CS4. Critical movie of proper Web submission of your homework assignments.

CS3 users only: CS3-saveforweb.mov. CS3 folks. The single biggest mistake students make--and it continues all semester long-- is to forget to CLICK the Apply button in the Image Size tab before saving. If you don't click Apply, and just press Enter or Return, Save for Web will save without downsampling (and your instructor will remove points from your work).

Errata & Clarifications

P. 30, near the top:
PRINTER DRIVER, the software that tell [should be TELLS]

P. 30. The portion of the image that will print (as shown in the Print dialog box shown on page 31) is called the thumbnail. Some folks are questioning whether it really is a "thumbnail" since it is so large. Adobe calls it a thumbnail because it is smaller than the actual printed document.

P. 32 paragraph 9, Moreover, if you [CLICK] Scale to Fit…

P. 37 paragraph 3, … put up on the Web [capitalize Web]

Tutorial 3 • Selection

Videos

Everyone should view the CS3-tool_critter.mov and CS3-QuickSelect.mov on selection. I recorded them in CS3, but selection is virtually the same in both versions.

Errata & Clarifications

P. 42 should read "Sample All Layers" not "Use All Layers."

P. 45, step 6c 1, second sentence. Replace "More" with "Move."

P.49, below step 4: the opposite of Contrast is Feather, not Radius.

P. 53, top of page, second sentence. Replace "Tools panel" with "toolbox"

P. 54, Shrinking Selections for Cleaner Edges, is not part of the Guided Exercise, so it assumes you have a selected region before you refine its edge.

Tutorial 4 • Layers

Videos

Everyone should view the CS3-layers.mov on layers. I recorded it in CS3, but layers are virtually the same in both versions. It is another long video.

CS4-layer_styles.mov is a new video I recorded in CS4. As Layer Styles have not changed, it will also be appropriate for CS3 users.

CS4-layer_locking.mov (5.41 min) is another new video that is applicable to both CS3 and CS4 users. It does not follow a precise guided exercise, but I recorded it because I have gotten so many inquiries about why the Locked Layer warning box appears when you use the Move tool.

Errata

P. 66, last sentence on page, replace "wit" with "with."

P. 70, Stroke layer style. In CS4, the default stroke color is black. (It was red in earlier versions of Photoshop.)

Tutorial 5 • Layer Case Studies

Videos (for CS3 and CS4 users)

CS4-type_tool.mov (13 min) shows the use of the Type tool.

CS4-layers_fun1.mov (14 min) shows the first part of Case Study 1.

CS4-layers_fun2.mov (6 min) shows the second part of Case Study 1.

CS4-precise_selection.mov (11 min) selects the pliers, and shows a variety of techniques for making clean selections. You will use this selection for the layered critter--Case Study 2.

CS4-case_study2.mov (25 min) finishes the layered critter--Case Study 2.

Erratahistory buttons

P. 78, step 4. Delete "them" at the end of the sentence.

P. 83, step 5d. for those of you who have forgotten, a Snapshot is a named History state. Click the Create Snapshot button from the bottom of the History panel. Once you have created snapshot, you can highlight that snapshot, and then click the Create new document from current state button to make a duplicate image, in its own window. If desired, you can save the duplicate made from the snapshot, as snapshots are discarded when an image is closed.

Tutorial 6 • Painting

Videos (for CS3 and CS4 users)

CS3-painting.mov (37 min) shows a variety of painting techniques covered in the tutorial.

CS4-layer_style_fills.mov (9 min) relates to Guided Exercise 6.7.

CS4-stroke_fills2.mov (10 min) relates to Guided Exercise 6.9.

Three videos show how the paint the cartoon: CS3-cartoon1.mov, CS3-cartoon2.mov, and CS3-cartoon3.mov.

Errata & Clarifications06-paint_bucket.jpg

P. 102: 06-paint_bucket.jpg was accidentally left off the book CD. You can download it here.

P. 107, step 11c: should read "Change the PATTERN settings."

Tutorial 7:
Image Management and Adobe Bridge

Videos

Two new Save for Web videos. Hopefully you will finally understand. save4WebCS3-redux.mov and sav4webCS4-redux.mov

In each video, I show two images, one portrait and one landscape, and show first how to reduce the pixel dimensions, and second how to adjust the jpg quality.

I recorded a half hour video on Bridge, and then reviewed it and the audio is not acceptable because I'm getting a cold (yet again) and my voice kept fading in and out. So, for this week, let's use some of the online Bridge tutorials

Dwayne Ferguson has an excellent series of Adobe Bridge tutorials in the center left of the window from:
http://www.computer-training-software.com/photoshop-cs4.htm

Russell Brown's favorite Bridge CS4 features:

Errata & Clarifications

VERY IMPORTANT: the tutorial will not work properly if you try to do it off the DVD. Before you begin, copy the folder of files for Tutorial 8 onto either your hard drive or onto a flash drive. Bridge will not let you rearrange thumbnails or add keywords to images on the DVD because they are read-only.

There are unfortuntely quite a few small errors in this tutorial, some our fault (like forgetting that the Options bar is now the Application bar), and some because Adobe has updated and changed Bridge a few times since the tutorial was written.

Bridge Home was discontinued after the tutorial was written. Ignore any references to it.

CS3 Users: here is the Bridge tutorial we wrote a few years ago for CS3: CS3-Bridge.pdf (904 kb).

CS4 Users: Adobe has made a lot of changes to Bridge after we wrote this tutorial. If you want, you can download a corrected version of the Bridge part of this tutorial in PDF format, Pp. 124-136. It is over 629 kb. ch07-new.pdf.

P. 125, workspaces. Delete the sentences "You can also use the Workspace menu to determine which workspaces show on the Path bar. Each displayed workspace has a check next to its name." There will only be one checkmark--for the workspace that is currently in use.

P126, top. The magnifying glass icon seems to choose between Adobe Bridge and Spotlight on the Mac, and only Adobe Bridge in Windows--in spite of Bridge Help stating otherwise.

P. 127, top. Unless you reset your Essentials workspace, your Sort by criterion may be something other than the By Filename shown here.

Page 128, step 5a. Some Mac users report that "Drag Favorites Here" shows up in the Favorites panel. It still does not on my Bridge, which is the most current.

P. 133.The number of Metadata sections varies, depending on whether you have Photoshop Standard or Extended, and the file format of the image being browsed. For example, you will only see the Camera Raw tab when browsing an image in raw format.

Towards the bottom, by default Bridge has for keyword sets, Events, People, Places, and Other Kaywords.

P. 136, Bridge Home is No More.
Adobe has discontinued a resource called Bridge Home. To remove
Bridge Home from your Favorites panel:
1. Click Bridge Home in the Favorites panel to select it.
2. Choose File > Remove from Favorites.

Adobe TV
Adobe has moved training videos and other resources from
Bridge Home to Adobe TV: http://tv.adobe.com.
On the right side of the Adobe TV window, you can explore topics
that might interest you, such as the Photographer or Designers
channels, or the Photoshop products. Each of these has topical
videos or other resources. Also note the Search Videos box.

Errata & Clarifications

Notes for CS3 users:
cs3-automations.pdf (933 kb)

P. 151, step 6d, second sentence should read: You can only do the second part if YOU know how to upload files.

qualityP. 152 and 155, step 4d 2: Sometimes the Quality box in the Document tab shows High Quality and Low Quality instead of a specific PPI as shown on page 155. If that is the case, you need to choose Software Updates from the Help menu in Bridge to download and install the most recent versions of your software. the downloads are free.

Also on P. 155, if the Document tab is expanded (the default) then you will need to scroll down to see the Header and Footer tabs.

P. 156, In Windows XP, Full Screen Mode will take over the screen, not the computer.

Tutorial 10: Correcting Images Tonality

Videos

CS3-10_adjustments_preview.mov shows CS3 users where to find the adjustments in the tutorials, as CS3 does not have an adjustments panel.

CS4-10_2-3br_contr.mov shows the Brightness/Contrast adjustment

CS4-10_4Levels.mov and CS4-10_5Levels2.mov demonstrate the Levels adjustment on both grayscale and color images.

CS4-10-seattle.mov shows you how to use the seattle compare image to have three adjustments plus the original on the same document.

And CS3-10_seattle-compare.mov does the same exercise using Photoshop CS3.

Errata & Clarifications

Photoshop CS3 does not have the adjustment presets found in the Adjustments panel new to CS4. So, CS3 users will have to find workarounds. For example, in place of the Lighter or Darker Levels presets, try dragging the Levels midtones (gamma) slider to the left to brighten the midtones or to the right to darken the midtones.

Tutorial 11: Adjusting Image Colors

Use the Hue/Saturation adjustment: CS4-11-hueSat.mov

Color Range + Color Balance (recorded in CS3): CS3-11-ColorRange.mov

Replacing Color (recorded in CS3): CS3-ReplaceColor.mov

CS4-11-orchid.mov demonstrates three different submissions for the orchid adjustment that need improvement. For each image, the Histogram and Info panels are used to document the problems, and then further adjustments are made to fix the problems. Even if you did fine on this assignment, please watch the video to observe the assessment techniques.

Errata & Clarifications

P. 170, last paragraph on page, should read: ...you found that you could mix the colors ON either side of green....

blue_sweaterP. 178, step 1. You should be working with 11-orchid.psd which you savedon page 175, step 7--not the original 11-orchid.jpg on the disk.

P. 185. Here is the 11-blue_sweater.jpg that was left off the disk.

Case_Study2.mov

Errata & Clarifications

In Case Study 2, we developed a better way of repairing the eyes of the girl than described in the written tutorial, and also made the dog eyes repair clearer in this tutorial: Case_Study2.mov.

Tutorial 14: Fun with Filters

Videos (filters unchanged between CS3 and CS4)

Liquify filter: CS4-liquify.mov

Clouds filter: CS4-clouds.mov

Difference Clouds filter: CS3-Dif_clouds.mov

Motion Blur filter: CS4-motionblur.mov

Errata & Clarifications

Two images were accidentally left off the disk. Click the thumbnail, and then download the full sized image.

aquarium small 14-aquarium.jpg

On P. 211, GE 14.1, your disk contains 14-liquify.jpg, not 14-rome.jpg. They are the same image, so use 14-liqufy.jpg. And when you do the exercise, depending on your mouse or tablet settings, clicking 6 times may bloat the eye too much.

Liquify Mesh suggestion from Windsor: when talking about the mesh in the liquify filter, you can use the filter on a low rez version of the image to speed it up, save the mesh, and then when you are satisfied, load it to apply to the hi rez version.

This is an approach you can generalize for many filters. Since complex filters can take a long time to apply, you can test the settings on low-res versions of the file, save the settings, and then load them onto the high res version. But there is a caution. with some filters, settings that make a big difference on a low res file barely change the high res file; high res needs stronger settings. the take home message--experiment.
